Reading existing pigment layers
Scrapes behind radiators and in cupboard interiors often reveal older greys and soft greens. We note those finds before proposing a new palette so the apartment keeps a quiet continuity with its own past.
Full archaeological surveys are not our role; we simply refuse to ignore what the building already whispers.
Lime-friendly finishes
Older stone cottages need breathable paints. Mineral or limewash systems keep moisture moving through walls that never had modern cavities, especially on Claddagh lanes facing weather from the bay.
Vinyl emulsions stay reserved for dry, later partitions where breathability is not the governing concern.
Atlantic light and cool undertones
Galway's cloud cover cools warm pigments fast. Colours that look honeyed in a Dublin showroom can turn muddy under Salthill skies, so we test large patches on north and west walls at different hours.
Clients photograph patches over three days; we adjust chroma before any full-room order leaves the merchant.
Trim strategies without false contrast
Bright white architraves against dark walls can look theatrical in small Latin Quarter rooms. We usually keep trim a half-step lighter than the field colour so mouldings stay readable without shouting.
Where original timber remains unpainted, we leave it honest and bring colour only to plaster fields.
Ceilings and tall Georgian volumes
High rooms near Eyre Square can feel cold if ceilings go stark white. A soft grey-green or warm grey wash pulls the volume down gently while still reflecting enough light for evening reading.
Pendant cords and roses are painted with the ceiling so modern electrics do not punctuate the heritage plane.
Sample boards and site pots
Every colour commission includes a board with wall, trim, textile, and metal chips taped in daylight order. On-site 100 ml pots confirm the choice against actual plaster before the main tins arrive.
Colour-only consultations start at €180 for a single room and €420 for a full apartment palette with written notes.
