Measuring door swings first
Before any sofa lands on a plan, we plot every door arc from hall to bathroom. Latin Quarter walk-ups often place the bathroom door opposite the kitchen; a deep armchair in that corridor turns daily life into a shuffle.

Hall to kitchen routes
Shop Street flats frequently share a single spine corridor barely a metre wide. We keep console tables under thirty centimetres deep and favour wall hooks over freestanding coat trees.
Grocery runs from the street market need a clear landing spot near the kitchen threshold; a slim bench with shoe storage often solves both arrival and storage without widening the hall.
Open-plan edits in stone shells
Cottage conversions sometimes remove a partition between kitchen and sitting room. We redraw the dining zone so chairs do not collide with the cooker door, and we mark a soft boundary with a rug rather than a half-wall of clutter.
If the original beam line remains, seating faces that axis so the room keeps a remembered structure even after walls leave.
Bedroom clearances for attic stairs
Many Galway apartments tuck a second bedroom under a steep stair. Bed placement must leave a dressing strip at least sixty centimetres wide; otherwise wardrobe doors and bed linen fights become nightly events.
We reject king-size frames in these rooms even when the floor area looks generous on paper—the pitch of the ceiling steals usable height at the edges.

When a beloved antique cannot climb the stair, we discuss local joinery to rebuild the piece in sections rather than forcing a doomed delivery day.
